Easy Ways to Help Protect the Environment
“Green living” seems to be hot buzz words right now. It seems like everyone is trying to “go green” in some way – even if it’s just purchasing Energy Star appliances, recycling, orusing re-useable grocery bags at the store. There are many critics out there that just don’t want to spend time to “go green” and maybe that is because they have the incorrect idea about being green . You might be one of those nay-sayers who think being green will use up too much of your time; I mean going through trash for recycling is not exactly how you might want to spend a Saturday night. Youmight alsobe concerned that being environmentally conscious is too expensive – at least it seems like a lot of the green products for sale cost more than the non-green products. Take light bulbs for example. The energy efficient bulbs are somewhatmore expensive, but they also have some great benefits – they last longer than normal bulbs and they are great for the environment. Even if you may not be a dedicated Earth lover, there are still some easy things you can do each day to be environmentally conscious yet not disrupt your life significantly.;
Below are some great tips on how to be less wasteful with products you use every day :
- Toss out the take-out bag, the plastic bag from your home , and the doggie bag and carry your food to work in an insulated, re-useable food container.
- Whenever you go food shopping , take along a reuseable grocery bag instead of using the plastic bags the store provides. You can even personalize your shopping bag with a custom monogram.
- Bring an coffee cup with you to Starbucks whenever you buy a cup of coffee. You will waste less by not using one of their cups.
- Instead of buying an unopened bottle of water, bring your own in a steel water bottle.
- Consider purchasing a travel set of eating utensils to take on your next dinner out. It doesn’t make sense to use plastic utensils for one meal and then toss them out. You might even get a colorful set, and purchase one set for each member of the family.
- Rather than using disposable paper napkins, consider switching to fabric napkins for meals at your house . You can easily make napkins from leftover fabric scraps or purchase a set to use and launder on your usual laundry day.
- Consider purchasing your food locally whenever possible. In my town I frequent the Farmer’s Market every summer for all my fresh vegetables. Each time you can buy locally, you are saving resources needed to move and keep the produce fresh.
- Wash your clothes in cold water and you can save around 85% of the energy that hot water would usually take to launder a load of clothes.
- Before getting in your automobile to run errands, think about walking to your destination instead. Think of the exercise you will get and the gas you will save !
