Geographically located at China’s southern coastline and then surrounded by the South China Sea to the West, South, and East, Hong Kong has a humid, sub-tropical climate.  Hong Kong has four distinctive seasons, although frost is pretty much unheard of.   Here’s some advice for what you can expect the weather to be like for your upcoming trip to Hong Kong.

Winters are usually sunny and mild.  February gets cloudier, with cold fronts that bring cooler dry winds from the North.  February is the chilliest month with average temperatures in the low 60s (mid-teens in Celsius), but it is an anticipated month for those who like to show, thanks to the many holiday sales (Chinese New Year generally falls at the end of January or sometime in February).

Springtime is quite nice as far as temperature goes, although at times unpredictable with fog, showers and intermittent high humidity.  It is a accepted time to visit, although somewhat more risky than fall.  You’ll find yourself wearing mostly light clothing, but don’t be surprised if you get rained on at some point.

Summertime is predictably hot and sticky, with frequent thunderstorms and warm wind from the Southwest.  Spring is also when hurricane-like typhoons hit most frequently, especially from July to September.  May to September (when Hong Kong experiences most of its rainfallwhen HK sees 80% of its rainfall) are times when travel should definitely be avoided due to the risk of these typhoonsmonsoons) which now and then result in flooding and landslides.  With temperatures averaging in the mid-80s / around 30°C but feeling much warmer with the humidity, you’ll want to pack very light summer clothing .  However, keep in mind that it will be extremely air conditioned whenever you’re indoors, so always bring a sweater, no matter how sizzling it feels!  A small umbrella is also advisable since you can expect rainit rains about four days each week, and on sunny days it will cover you from the sun.

Autumn in Hong Kong (from September to December) is ideal with clear, sunny days.  It doesn’t get so humid as it does in the spring.  November is probably the most enjoyable time of year to visit Hong Kong, with temperatures on average between 67° and 77° F (19-25°C) and not humid.  In fact, the most ideal travel times to spend in Hong Kong extend from October until February. 

Hong Kong is a wonderful travel destination, whether you spend the whole time in Kowloon, near the beach , or exploring the many parks.  Whatever activities you have in mind, you’ll certainly make the most of your trip now that you recognise what temperatures and conditions to predict, bring a sweater, and remember to avoid monsoon-season!

Today, the need for alternative fuel sources is clear. Our reliance on fossil fuels is no longer sustainable or affordable. As discussed, biomass in its raw form is not ideal as an fuel source through its low density and high moisture content. One of the simplest ways to turn biomass into a highly proficient and cheap form of fuel is to compress the wood material into pellets.
